When I was five years old I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. My father was a surgeon and I wanted to be like the man I admired. But as I got older I began to be filled with doubts. That coupled with trials, tribulations and a physical disability left me less than confident in my ability to have a successful medical career.
It all came to a head my junior year of medical school during an anxiety attack. As I struggled to keep myself from curling up in the fetal position I realized that the solution to my struggles was not in blaming or in holding on to resentments but rather the key to healing my being was in forgiveness.
I began to live moment to moment – reclaiming my life – focusing only on the positive and blocking out all negative thoughts. I discovered that was one of the keys to happiness.
I discovered what I really wanted was to help people, to be a doctor for underserved, rural populations. I realized I had to follow my own path to be truly happy. That path eventually led me to write this book – A New Language for Life: Happy No Matter What. In pursuing that dream I chose to give up a very successful medical practice to take a chance at putting my message out in front of the world.
- In looking at your own life what paths have you chosen for yourself or are you on a path that was designated for you by someone else?
- What do you think about your current path and or life situation?
- What would you choose to do differently?
